Dear Family and Friends,
Many of you have been so kind to keep praying for Cole. We appreciate each and every one of you and the time you take to lift Cole up to the Lord. We wanted to give you an update along with some prayer requests.
Cole has been diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. CP is an umbrella term for a variety of disorders that affect a child's ability to move and maintain posture and balance. These disorders are caused by a brain injury that occurs before birth, during birth, or within the first few years after birth. Cole's bleed most likely occurred during birth. The injury doesn't damage the child's muscles or the nerves connecting them to the spinal cord-only the brain's ability to control the muscles. Cerebral Palsy is not a progressive disorder. Once the brain injury has occurred, it will not get worse.
Cole's bleed was most severe on the right side of his brain, therefore affecting the left side of his body. He tends to hold his left hand in a fist and clenches his toes on his left foot as well. Cole will most likely struggle with gross and fine motor skills. However, speech can also be greatly affected by a bleed.
Cole has physical, occupational and speech therapy every week. We can't say enough about Cole's therapists and the progress they have helped him achieve.
A few highlights from the past few weeks:
-sitting unassisted
-sitting up in the grocery cart
-saying "ba-ba" and "ma-ma"
-eating small bites of waffles, pancakes, chicken, ground turkey
Eventhough Cole is small for a 13 month old (10 months adjusted age), the drs. are pleased with his weight gain. He now tips the scale at 16 lbs!
We are so thankful that RSV, flu and swine flu season is almost behind us. Cole has had a few common colds this season. We are very blessed that he escaped all serious illnesses.
He loves to kick and splash in the bathtub. We are looking forward to summer and swimming lessons. All of our therapists have recommended swimming as a great activity for Cole.
Please continue to pray for Cole's health, growth and development. We know that his milestones will come more slowly, but we are confident that he will reach them.
