Cupcake Party

We had our families over this weekend for cupcakes and ice cream to celebrate Cole's 2nd birthday.
We are planning to have a swimming party for him this summer, so we did something low key just so we could sing and celebrate.  I know it seems kinda funny to weird to wait until this summer for a party, but it is hard to plan something in the winter.  Cole loves to swim, so I decided even before I was on bed rest that a summer party would be best.
We went to Dr. Pielop this morning for his 2 year check up.  Cole is in the 49% for height and finally made the charts on weight with a whopping 19.8 pounds in the 2%.  Dr. Pielop was very impressed with his vocabulary.  I am such the nerdy mom and I made a list of all his words--he has 185 words that he uses by himself, without being prompted.  Cole has many more words that he will regularly repeat.  The saddest and hardest part of the appt was when Cole had to get blood taken out of his arm! What?? I thought the finger prick was going to bad and I was shocked when they said they had to do it from his arm.  I think I was 25 before I ever had blood taken from my arm.  He actually did really well.  Thank goodness my mom was there to help!
Here are some pictures from the family party.  I am the worst person with a camera. Of course I didn't take any pictures of the set up or cute cupcake toppers.  Then my camera battery ran out half way through so my sister-in-law took took the rest of the pictures.  I will add those as soon as I get them.
Yummy!

Headed to the Lease

Cy and Cole just left to go feed the horses and run the dogs.
Cole is obsessed with horses these days. His favorite is "Anus" aka "Amos"!
He loves to feed them carrots.  As soon as you mentioned the word horse, he immediately launches into "Anus, horsie, feed, tarrot (carrot), bite, mmmmm".
He loves to watch the dogs also, but doesn't like to get too close.  He prefers to watch through the window.
He can name most of the dogs--Tex, Moosh (Moose), Bruder (Brother), Cy, Pete--eventhough we don't own him anymore.  As he looks through the window he says over and over, "Sit, Stay, Bartking (Barking), hush up, no-no, tennel (kennel)"
Cole cracks us up these days-he is such a little talker and repeats everything!!
I am here in bed while the boys are out playing.  I am 27 weeks pregnant today.  Praise the Lord that we made it another week. :)  We are so thankful.
And another new hat--from J-Paw
Ready to go!

Christmas 2010

So, this blog isn't exactly in order.  But, I thought while I have time I would post our Christmas.
We had a great Christmas celebrating with both of our families.
Cole was spoiled rotten and got so many toys that I made our moms return some of the gifts!
Am I the meanest mom around??  Cole hardly pays attention to his toys.  All he wants to do is walk around and clean out the drawers.
Here are some pictures from the holidays.
Checking out his stocking with Duke
Cole loves to play with his Diaper Genie, so we got him a clean one!

Official Bed rest

Well, the day has come that my doctor recommended bed rest.
I am 26 weeks and 4 days pregnant and will spend the remainder of this pregnancy in bed.
I am thankful that I will be at home and not in the hospital.
I am allowed to stand up for 15 minutes every hour, but other than that I have to be sitting or laying down.
I am not allowed to pick up Cole at all, so I have to have someone here at all times.
Our parents have already stepped up to help and I am so thankful that we live so close to our families.
Our wonderful housekeeper is also going to help so much.
We are praying that this precious baby will stay  put for at least 10 more weeks.

Here are some pictures of Cole to end on a happy note!
This smile cracks me up!

Cole loves hats!

Here is proof that no matter where we are, Cole always can find a hat!
He loves to wear hats and have everyone else wear them too.  He will put them on and then say, "mirror, mirror".  It cracks me up!

Can You Believe I Started a Blog???

I know, I know, I never thought I would have my own blog!! But, after reading friend's blogs for years now, I decided I should channel some of that time into creating memories for my own family.
I haven't learned all how to do all the cutesy designs yet, (maybe I need to hire someone to do that!), but I thought I would get my ideas down and go from there.
I have been writing on CaringBridge for the past 2 years to journal our path with Cole since his birth.  I have archived those posts on this blog too.  The Lord has done amazing works in Cole's life and I don't feel that CaringBridge is appropriate for us anymore--praise Jesus!
I am now 25 weeks pregnant with our second son and I want to journal as our lives are about to change from a family of 3 to a family of 4!
So, this blog will a scrapbook for us.  I do hope that some of you enjoy reading about our everyday life and our once in awhile adventures.
Here is to a new chapter!

MONDAY, APRIL 19, 2010 9:03 AM, CDT
Dear Family and Friends,
We wanted to let you know that Cole will have eye surgery on Wednesday.  The surgery will correct his strabismus, crossed eyes.
It is a routine surgery for the dr., but we are still nervous about it.
The surgery will take approximately 45 minutes and we should be home after a few hours.
The surgery schedule isn't finalized until the night before. So, we won't know Cole's time until tomorrow night.  We are praying that he is early in the morning.  He won't be able to eat 12 hours before surgery so it will be really difficult if we are scheduled in the afternoon.
Please pray that Cole would be one of the first on the schedule.
Please also pray for wisdom for Dr. Coats and that Cole would breeze through the anesthesia and would come off the vent easily.
We will update again tomorrow night once we know about the schedule.
Thanks in advance for your prayers.
Love,
Ali and Cy

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 21, 2010 12:23 PM, CDT
We are home from surgery!
Thank you for all your prayers this morning.
Cole did very well as we waited for 2 hours before surgery.
Dr. Coats said the surgery went well.
Cole didn't have too much trouble waking up from the anesthesia.
He is doing well now, will probably just be fussy and tired for the rest of the day.
No pictures for this update.  His eyes are a little scary looking, but should be back to normal in the next few days.

We are SO thankful for a successful surgery.
God truly had His hand on every piece of today.

Love,
Ali and Cy

"The angel said to them, "Do not be afraid.  I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.  Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord."  Luke 2:10-11

Dear Family and Friends,
It is hard to believe that Christmas is just around the corner and the new year will be here before we know it!  This time of year is so busy for all of us, but I am trying to slow down and appreciate all of our blessings.
Cole continues to amaze us and entertain us everyday!  His personality is shining through for sure.
His vocabulary is growing and we now have to watch what we say in front of him.  I always made fun of parents who spelled words in front of their kids and now I do the same thing!  He is picking up on 2 syllable words and we are working on talking in phrases instead of single words.
His gross motor skills are improving too.  He is almost an independent walker!  He stands unassisted for a few minutes at a time.  He pulls up in his crib and walks from end to end while holding onto the rails.  He can take a few steps unassisted, but then loses his balance and needs help.  He is so determined to walk on his own and we are praying it will be close to his 2nd birthday that he is officially walking independently.  We had our last day of physical therapy with Mike on Thursday.  She has been our therapist for 1.5 years.  She has worked so hard with Cole and we will forever be grateful for her determination and ability to push Cole to be his best. We will be going to a new PT next year thanks to insurance.
He loves balls and wants to chase them around the house all day.  We moved his toy chest out of the den last week when we hosted Cy's company Christmas party at our house.  He hasn't even noticed that the toys are gone!! As long as there are balls to kick, shutters to open and close, door knobs to turn, and drawers of tupperware to empty, he is happy!
I am now 22 weeks pregnant and we confirmed that we are having a boy!  We are thrilled and know that Cole will be a great big brother.  I am excited to see the relationship between brothers. We are trying to prepare Cole for the new baby.  He thinks everyone has a baby in their tummy.  He loves to look in the mirror and pat my tummy and his tummy as well!
We would appreciate your continued prayers for Cole's development.
It brings tears to my eyes to think of the progress that he has made in the past 2 years.  We know that his progress is all due to healing from the Lord.  Please also continue to pray for an uneventful and full term pregnancy for me.  I go to the doctor every 10 days.  We are praying that this little guy continues to grow and develop and will be born in mid-April.
I pray that each of you have a very Merry Christmas.
I added lots of new pictures on page 1 of the photo gallery.

Love,
Ali

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, 2010 12:17 PM, CDT
Hi Friends and Family-
I am so excited to report that Cole is making great progress!  I think he is going through a "learning spurt" right now.  The therapists have told us that most kids do experience these spurts when everything seems to come together.  It is so exciting to watch Cole every day.
He has new braces for his legs that help with his walking.  He now has fancy tennis shoes too!  The PT and OT both told me this week that they are so impressed with Cole's walking.  He has a good gait and takes steps right, left.  His balance is his biggest hurdle.  He can walk fairly well as long as we hold him by the waist.  He is very curious and wants to get into anything and everything.  I guess that is a typical toddler. :)
His speech is improving too.  He now can point to his head, eye, nose, mouth, ear, belly, knee and foot.  His vocabulary consists of shoe, bee, knee, dog, Mommy, Papa, bye-bye, all gone, hat, more, eye, bird, deer, book, please, ball, and yeah.  Some words are easier to understand than others, but he can get his point across. He knows the animal sounds for dog, cow and cat.
His biggest struggle is still his left hand.  He uses his left arm, but keeps his left hand fisted most of the time. He wears a brace that is helping keep his hand open.
And now the biggest news....Cole is going to be a BIG BROTHER!!!
We are SO excited and amazed at the blessing that the Lord has given us!  Most of you know that Cy and I struggled with infertility for nearly 3 years.  We did 4 rounds of IVF to get pregnant with the twins.  We always thought we wanted our family to be bigger, so we had talked about adoption or going down the fertility road again.
Well, the Lord had another plan in mind!
Our church had a service on May 23, 2010 that addressed infertility.  At the end of the sermon, our pastor, Gregg Matte, invited couples who were dealing with infertility to come to the altar rails.  The entire church prayed for these couples.  As soon as Pastor Gregg gave the invitation, I was ready to go down front.  It was a very powerful and special time. I came home and put a star on my calendar on that Sunday.
To spare you the details, I got pregnant 2 short months later in July! No fertility treatments this time!  After feeling sick in the mornings for over a week, I finally decided to take a pregnancy test-well, actually 3 tests!  They were all positive!
My doctor's office suggested I do blood work just to make sure since they were in shock as well.  I went the dr. the Friday before Labor Day and found out that I was already 7 weeks pregnant!!
I will be 11 weeks tomorrow and my due date is April 22, 2011.  April 22, 2011 is Good Friday.  It will also be the 2 year anniversary since Cole came home from the hospital.  Just another sweet reminder that the Lord has a perfect plan.
I would appreciate your prayers for a healthy, full term pregnancy with no complications.  We are going to take some precautions this time to help ward off pre-term labor.  My dr. has assured me that a singleton pregnancy is much different than a twin pregnancy.
Thank you for continuing to care for our family.  We appreciate your prayers more than we could ever express.
"Yet the Lord longs to be gracious to you; He rises to show you compassion.  For the Lord is a God of justice.  Blessed are all who wait for Him!" Isaiah 30:18

TUESDAY, JULY 27, 2010 8:30 PM, CDT
Hello Friends and Family-
I just wanted to give you a quick update on our 2 great dr. appointments.  Cole had a check up last Friday with Dr. Whitehead, his neurosurgeon.  Dr. Whitehead was impressed with Cole and said everything with his shunt looks good.  He showed us Cole's brain scans from last year to this year.  It was amazing to see how his brain is taking over and the fluid and blood are almost gone.  Today Cole had a check up with Dr. Coats, his eye doctor.  Dr. Coats said that Cole's eyes were beautiful!  He said we don't have to come back unless we start to notice a problem.  We are so thankful for such good news.

Cole continues to work hard each day in therapy.  His occupational therapist is out of town for a month, so we will be working hard to home.  We are also going to try Gymboree.  I really think Cole will enjoy the music and instruments.

His army crawling is coming along and he is working on standing.  Today he stood (while holding onto a chair) for 10 seconds without me holding him steady.  It reminds me of the days when he was learning to sit.  Everyday he makes a little more progress.

His speech is coming along as well.  Since we turned his car seat around he is able to look out the window.  I am constantly pointing out things along the road. Today he repeated truck.  He has added belly, knee and eye to his list of body parts that he can point to.

I finally broke down and took Cole for his first haircut!  I couldn't stand to cut his curls on top, so we just cut the back.  I must admit, it does look much better and he looks so much older.

We are still spending lots of time in the pool.  Cole continues to love the water and always amazes us by sticking his face in the water.  I think swimming lessons will be next on the agenda.

I added lots of new pictures on pages 4 and 5 of the photo gallery.

We continue to thank God everyday for the blessing of being Cole's parents.  His personality continues to develop and we find ourselves laughing more each day.

We hope all is well with each of you.  Thank you again for caring so much about Cole.

Love,
Ali

    Hi Friends-
Happy summer!  We hope each of you are doing well and adjusting to this hot weather!
Cole loves to swim, so we spend lots of time in the pool.  He splashes and kicks and doesn't mind water in his face.  We are so glad he is comfortable in the water.
Our therapy schedule is still in full force--too bad we don't get a break for summer. :(  We have seen so much progress in the past few weeks.
Cole is starting to imitate and babble all the time.  He has said a few "words"--bird, dog, mama, papa, ba-by, pu-ppy.  I am sure you can imagine how proud Cy is!! :) He points to the pheasant in our den as soon as we round the corner and says "bird". Next he points to the french doors and says "dog". He comprehends very well and is proud to show off his tongue, hair, ear and feet.  He gives kisses, hugs and pats and waves hello and bye-bye.
Cole is a pro at sitting and is now working on transitions--from sitting to laying down, standing to bending over and vice versa.  He can pivot on his stomach and is working on army crawling.  He can roll and army crawl across the room.  He does get easily frustrated, but will work to get where he is going.
He is still long and lean, but is finally wearing 12 month clothes!!
I hope he will make the growth chart when we go for his 18 month checkup at the end of July.
We are having lots of fun every day and are so thankful for our precious boy.  We are so impressed and excited by his progress.  We know that Cole has to work very hard for each new skill, but he is learning that hard work and determination do pay off.
Thank you for keeping up with us.
Be sure to check out the new pictures on pages 4 and 5.

    Love,
    Ali

Hi-
We went to the eye doctor today for Cole's post op visit.
Dr. Coats was very impressed with Cole's eyes.  He said most kids have some residual eye crossing after surgery, but he said Cole didn't have any! We haven't seen his eyes cross 1 time since the surgery.  We don't have to go back for 3 months.

Thank you, thank you for all your prayers for Cole. It means so much to us that you are willing to lift up Cole.   We know that the Lord heard our prayers and answered them with a successful surgery.

We will post again soon with more pictures!

FRIDAY, APRIL 2, 2010 6:32 PM, CDT
Dear Family and Friends,   We can hardly believe that it has been 1 year since Cole came home from the hospital!  We will never forget the feeling of walking out of the NICU with Cole in our arms.  We left the hospital empty handed for 74 days.  Finally, on day 75 of Cole's life and Good Friday, we left as a family. We know it was the Lord's perfect timing to bring Cole home to us on the same day that Jesus died for our sins.  Good Friday will forever hold a special place in our hearts.
I received the following devotional from the Proverbs 31 Woman's Ministry.  I love the way it walks us through the 3 days of Jesus' death and resurrection.
We pray that each of you have a very blessed Easter with your family.  May we all remember that with God all things are possible.  Our family is experiencing that truth as we watch Cole develop and reach milestones.  I added lots of new pictures on pages 4 and 5 of the photo gallery.Thank you for your continued prayers for Cole and our family.  We are blessed by the outpouring of love and support that so many still show for us.

"The angel said to the women, ‘Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said.'" Matthew 28:5-6a (NIV)

Told by a teacher he was too stupid to learn: Thomas Edison

Fired from his job at a newspaper because he didn't have good ideas: Walt Disney

A music teacher told him he had no hope as a composer: Beethoven

Falsely accused, arrested, killed: Jesus Christ

The disciples of Jesus must have been shattered that Friday. For three years they followed the man from Nazareth. They watched Him heal the sick, restore sight to the blind, and even raise people from the dead. When Jesus said, "I have come as Light into the world, so that everyone who believes in Me will not remain in darkness " (John 12:46, NAS), they got it. Darkness enveloped the hearts of their countrymen. They needed a "Light."

Twelve ordinary men abandoned everything to follow Jesus: jobs, family, and homes. Not with regret, but with hope. Hope for the promise Jesus offered. Look where it got them that Friday. Good Friday, we call it now. But it was anything but good to them. Jesus was dead – they'd witnessed the crucifixion. Only 11 now, they must have gathered that night after scattering throughout the city. Other followers joined them to mourn the death of the man they loved, and the death of the hope He offered.

On Saturday, they still gathered. No one left - though they could have. They could have packed up their things and put this failed adventure behind them. Back to fishing, back to family, back to normal. But no one left. In spite of what appeared to be complete failure of this new kingdom, everyone stayed. Faithful.

Saturday inched forward to noon, dusk, and then evening. The beauty of the night sky didn't ease their pain. Perhaps they reminisced some. In hindsight, Jesus wasn't really what they were expecting. When the prophets of old foretold a king would come to rescue them, they figured it would be someone imposing, with power, maybe with chariots to whip their enemies into submission. Some took longer than others to readjust their expectations. But when God opened their eyes to the beauty of His plan, they bought into it with their lives.

I'm sure troubled thoughts stole their sleep that Saturday night. Finally, in complete exhaustion their tired bodies overtook their worried minds. Sunday morning dawned. I imagine some woke up hoping it was all a bad dream. Then reality settled in, like heavy summer storm clouds. Jesus was still dead.

Two women got ready first and went to the tomb. Expecting to find the body of their beloved Savior, God treated them instead to a display of His power. With a violent earthquake shaki ng the ground, an angel of the Lord came from heaven, rolled back the stone covering the tomb and sat down on the rock. Hello!

The angel looked at the women, and spoke words that transformed them from hopeless to hope-filled: "Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples: He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee" (Matthew 28:5-7a, NIV).

Can you even imagine the celebration? It had only looked like failure. Instead, it was glorious victory! Hope wasn't dead. Jesus was alive! The disciples learned a lesson they would never forget: When God is involved, things aren't always what they seem.

Today we see problems and failures with the same eyes as the disciples. Even knowing that God is able to do things beyond what we can imagine, when we look at a "failure," we often only see an ending. God, however, sees an opportunity for a new beginning. As we celebrate Easter, may that truth nestle itself into our heart. With God all things are possible. He is risen!

Dear Lord, my heart is filled with thanksgiving and praise for You. How can I begin to thank You for sending Jesus, and for His sacrifice for me? Thank You also for the lesson that nothing is too big for You. Help me remember that truth when I'm facing what looks like failure. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

MONDAY, MARCH 1, 2010 6:57 PM, CST
Dear Family and Friends,
Many of you have been so kind to keep praying for Cole.  We appreciate each and every one of you and the time you take to lift Cole up to the Lord.  We wanted to give you an update along with some prayer requests.

Cole has been diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy.  CP is an umbrella term for a variety of disorders that affect a child's ability to move and maintain posture and balance.  These disorders are caused by a brain injury that occurs before birth, during birth, or within the first few years after birth.  Cole's bleed most likely occurred during birth.  The injury doesn't damage the child's muscles or the nerves connecting them to the spinal cord-only the brain's ability to control the muscles.  Cerebral Palsy is not a progressive disorder.  Once the brain injury has occurred, it will not get worse.

Cole's bleed was most severe on the right side of his brain, therefore affecting the left side of his body.  He tends to hold his left hand in a fist and clenches his toes on his left foot as well.  Cole will most likely struggle with gross and fine motor skills.  However, speech can also be greatly affected by a bleed.

Cole has physical, occupational and speech therapy every week.  We can't say enough about Cole's therapists and the progress they have helped him achieve.

A few highlights from the past few weeks:
-sitting unassisted
-sitting up in the grocery cart
-saying "ba-ba" and "ma-ma"
-eating small bites of waffles, pancakes, chicken, ground turkey

Eventhough Cole is small for a 13 month old (10 months adjusted age), the drs. are pleased with his weight gain.  He now tips the scale at 16 lbs!

We are so thankful that RSV, flu and swine flu season is almost behind us.  Cole has had a few common colds this season.  We are very blessed that he escaped all serious illnesses.

He loves to kick and splash in the bathtub.  We are looking forward to summer and swimming lessons.  All of our therapists have recommended swimming as a great activity for Cole.

Please continue to pray for Cole's health, growth and development.  We know that his milestones will come more slowly, but we are confident that he will reach them.

I added new pics to the photo gallery.  The quality of the pictures isn't the best-so sorry.

Your continued friendship, love and support mean more than you will ever know.

Love,
Ali and Cy

Hi Friends-
I can't believe it has been a month and a half since I updated this site!  Things have been busy now that hunting season is upon us! :)
Cole is  making strides in physical therapy each week.  We are starting occupational and speech therapy at home next week.
We go to music class on Fridays and Cole just loves it.  It is the only place he hears real musical talent!
Now that he is on Prevacid, eating has become much easier and more enjoyable.  He gained 10 oz this month and is closing in on 13 pounds.
We are trying to stay home as much as possible since  flu and RSV season are in full swing.
I hear the little Mr. waking up from his nap so I better go.
There are lots of updated pictures in the gallery!

I hope each of you are doing well and steering clear on the flu.
Thank you for keeping Cole in your prayers as he continues to develop and reach milestones.

Love,
Ali and Cy
